Ten weeks of winter photography fun – and a few excerpts from poems, recipes, app recommendations, book tips and quotations to further inspire creativity.

‘Fifty Shades of Winter’ is a workshop that covers 10 weeks of photo ideas to capture the essence of winter and ensures that you find time to take pictures even when things are at their busiest.

Each week begins with a list of ideas for the respective photo theme and is complemented by a Pinterest mood board.

Week 1: Christmas Lights

To kick off the Christmas photography season, we’ll be covering different ways to use fairy lights and artificial lighting in both your indoor and outdoor photography.

Week 2: Christmas Biscuits

Biscuits are a great way to dabble in food photography. This week, you will receive five different recipes and an idea on how to capture each of the biscuits, in your photos.

Week 3: Relaxation

Now that the hustle and bustle of the winter Christmas vacation is over, you will feel excited about winding down. In this week's theme, I'll be covering five different ways to relax and also capture the feeling of relaxation in your photos.

Week 4: Happy New Year

The time for new beginnings. In this first of the brand new year, you will receive five different challenge themes - these are things you encounter daily in and around your home. You will also receive bonus content for including these in your Instagram presentation.

Week 5: Outdoors in the Cold

This week, you will receive cool activity ideas for spending time outdoors doing something worth photographing, such as going on a Glühwein hike.

Week 6: Grey

The first two colours (or shades) that come to mind when you think of winter are indeed grey and white - but as snow isn’t always a guarantee, we’ll focus on different types of “grey” subjects this week, and you’ll be surprised how stunning the photos will turn out.

Week 7: Winter Scenes

This week, we will be delving into typical wintery scenes and subjects. The ideas will allow you to spend more time outdoors, soaking up a little bit of the missing vitamin D.

Week 8: Black and White

This week, we will focus on black-and-white photography—not to be mistaken with the grey theme from two weeks previously. You’ll learn which types of scenes and subjects typically look good in black-and-white —and which don’t.

Week 9: Books

Books are great photography accessories, and this week's theme will give you inspiring ideas for including them in your photos—both as the main subject and as accessories.

Week 10: Editing.

Each round of the 50 Shades of Workshops ends with a week of editing. The editing skills you learn each time will be demonstrated in Lightroom, but many ideas and methods can also be implemented with other editing software. The methods learned each time are to enhance the season’s atmosphere.

Teaser Lesson:

Christmas market: a treasure trove of photographic opportunities

Christmas markets are magical places filled with vibrant lights and festive cheer. As you stroll through the market, your camera becomes a tool for capturing the essence of this enchanting experience.

One of the most striking features of any Christmas market is the dazzling display of lights. From sparkling fairy lights strung across stalls to larger-than-life decorations, the lighting creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Tip: set your camera to the widest aperture, select a fast shutter speed and adjust the ISO settings to suit your lighting preferences. Then, focus on a person or object in the foreground to capture the setting and create a bokeh with the fairy lights in the background.

As the cold air bites, you see people wrapped up in cosy winter clothes, huddled together to warm their hands on steaming mugs of mulled wine. Capture perfect moments as people sip their drinks and enjoy the sense of community and festivity.

Is there a caroler or a local band playing cheery songs? Capture moments when people are dancing or singing along.

There are decorations in every corner of the Christmas markets. Focus on the details—close-ups of intricate designs or wide shots showing the entire festive display.

The same goes for the items for sale, from handmade crafts to delicious treats. Capture the bright colours and textures of the products, whether it's a beautifully wrapped gift or an enticing food item. Don't forget to photograph the vendors interacting with customers to show the personal touch of the market.
