Is that you?

Then this is what you can expect:

Before the learning experience begins, we’ll delve into a couple of basics:

Day 0: Equipment:

I’ll introduce you to the few pieces of equipment that I use for all my photos. You’ll be surprised to see how little it is.

Day 0: Setting up your Camera:

When you look at your camera’s manual, you’ll be overwhelmed by the mass of features. I’ll introduce you to the settings you need (a lot less than you think) and help you set up your camera for success.

Day 1: Focusing:

The Aha-Moment: After completing this lesson you’ll know HOW to select the best subject in the scene to have in focus and HOW to get them tack-sharp.

Day 2: Blurry Backgrounds:

The game changer. You’ll learn HOW to set up your camera and capture beautiful blurry backgrounds or include out-of-focus elements in the foreground for a more interesting look.

Day 3: Understanding Subjects:

Clarity. After this lesson, you’ll know how to set the scene for your photos, why some settings will never work and how to ensure the main motif is the focus of every viewer’s attention.

Day 4: Scenes:

The Sky’s the Limit. The world is full of beauty. BUT also full of boring scenes. In this lesson you’ll learn how to turn boring scenes into works of art.

Day 5: When to Walk Away:

Confidence. In the previous lessons you learned how to set the scene for your photos. In this lesson you’ll learn which subjects are best left to enjoy with the naked eye and not necessarily in photos.

Day 6: position:

From Amateur to Professional. With the guides in this lesson, you’ll transform your photos from boring- to professional by knowing how to position yourself and hold the camera to capture your scenes and subjects. Covering: Everyday scenes inside and outside the home, people in portraits and groups, animals, flowers and buildings.

Day 7: The professional look:

Combine what you’ve learned in week one to create photos that make people’s jaws drop.

Day 8: Introducing Light:

The Artist’s Brush for Photographers. In this lesson you’ll learn how to recognise good photography light and distinguish between good and bad lighting situations.

Day 9: Enhancing the main Subject with Light:

You’ll learn the first simple methods to use light to enhance your main subject and also how to use light in interesting ways.

Day 10: Manipulating Light:

From now on “Manual Mode” yay!: Now is the time to get creative with light. Even the worst lighting situations can be used to create interesting photos. Once you learn how to read light and set your camera up to create amazing images with it you’ll be well on your way to becoming the photographer you’ve always dreamed of becoming.

Day 11: Capturing the perfect Moment:

This is the one thing many photographers aren’t particularly good at. Or how many times have you “just missed” a great photography opportunity? This lesson will teach you the skills to make those “missed shots” a thing of the past.

Day 12: Backgrounds:

The World is your Backdrop. What is a perfect background setting for your central motifs? This lesson will teach you what to watch out for when setting the scene for your photos.

Day 13: Light as the Main Subject:

Some types of light are so pretty that they can brighten up even the most boring locations. You’ll learn how to capture light (without going blind) and how to use the setting to enhance its beauty.

Day 14: Creating Mood:

Create Photos that people look at for longer than a few seconds. By using elements like light, weather or the time of year, and combining them, you photography will become more captivating. In this lesson you’ll learn how they individually affect the feel of the photo.

Day 15: Getting Arty in the Dark:

Learn cool tricks and hacks for creating stand-out photos after the sun has gone down.

Day 16: In and out of the Frame:

Another Biggie. Everything you need to know about composition. How to set up your shot. Learn where to place your main subjects and why.

Day 17: Collecting and Gathering:

Accessories can bring boring scenes to life. In this lesson, you’ll receive a list of things you might want to collect and how to use them in your photography compositions.

Day 18: Photographing your Home and Everyday Life:

Did you know that we spend 90% of our time indoors? Learn how to use your home for photography without turning it into a photo studio.

The first step in developing your unique photography style. In this lesson, I’ll teach you how to take a series of photos of the same subject in one session.

Day 20: Taking Photos for Instagram:

The photos you post on Instagram must stand out in the main feed. That means they must tell the whole story within a tiny square. Day twenty will be the one that uncovers the secrets of why you haven’t gained all that many faithful followers (who you are friends with or related to) yet.

Day 21: Finding Mentors and Inspiration:

Learn from those who started before you. In this lesson you’ll learn where to find inspiration and how to copy other photographers ideas in your own unique way.

Day 21: Recap:

You’ve made it - you’re a photographer! This lesson brings it all together.

  • Creating the “Monet Look”

  • Succeeding on Instagram

  • Cropping and resizing

An extract from Day 7:

what to expect from the

Monthly Challenges

In the “Me and My Camera” program, we have a new photography challenge every month. The challenge theme disappears when the month ends and is replaced by a new one.

Each challenge theme is complemented with an extensive guide, a Pinterest mood board and a list of downloadable ideas for every day of the month.

To give you a sense of what to expect, here is an excerpt from the ‘Books’ theme:

BOOKS

Books can be used either with a person as an accessory or as the main subject in a photo.

Let's start with books as an accessory to create an atmosphere.

If someone is hiding behind a book, the feeling is playful and mysterious.

If someone is reading, the feeling is more calming and studious.

If someone is working with an open book on their desk and possibly wearing glasses and taking notes, the feeling is more intellectual.

The flying books in the picture below add a magical touch:

Always bear this in mind when incorporating books into your photos to tell a story. The feeling you want to convey must be emphasised by the surroundings.

Here's how you can create the atmosphere in your book photos:

Cosy:

You need warm, dim lighting to create a cosy atmosphere during the autumn or winter. Use accessories such as fairy lights and/or candles.

In spring and summer, you can use the books to create a backdrop of someone rocking in a hammock or drinking peppermint tea in the garden while reading.

Studious or intellectual

Set the book(s) on a table, perhaps with some scattered pages, paperclips, stationery, etc. You can include someone in action reading the book and/or taking notes. Or create an inspiring flat lay with an open book, perhaps a cup of tea and some stationery scattered around.

Magical/Playful

You don't need to be a Photoshop pro to create magical book photos. Just make sure that the environment, the person and their clothing match the mood you want to create. Check out the Pinterest mood board for cool ideas for magical book photos.

Let the title tell the story.

The book cover and title are a story in themselves. For example, if the person in the photo is reading a horror book, you might want to have it look up at the book's edge with wide eyes in fear. On the other hand, if the book is funny, you might want to photograph the person laughing out loud, holding the book to his or her chest.

It depends on the book and its title and what emotions the book title evokes.

And that's not all...

As I mentioned above, this is just a small excerpt!

The theme continues with

  • Methods for photographing books as the main subject

  • A list of downloadable ideas to help you try a different method for each day of the month

  • A Pinterest mood board for inspiration
