Weekly photography highlights: A year full of creative development!

The best way to grow as a photographer and stay creative is to learn new photography techniques and put them into practice.

In our busy lives, we often forget about our favourite hobbies, and finding new photo ideas can quickly become stressful. We lose sight of the hobby we once loved and get frustrated because we're not making progress.

The ‘Photography Journey’ programme offers an inspiring weekly photography theme, a guide to photographing the subject, and ideas and inspiration! The new ‘Girls with Cameras Forum’ is there for you if you want to share your photos, be inspired by the photos of others (in weeks when you don't have time to pick up your camera) and be inspired by my private blog posts.

Weekly photography tutorial + ideas on how you can use the theme to create photos in your style

Having a photography style doesn't mean focusing on one subject. It means giving each of your photos the same feel. Essentially, your photos should look good in a collection or exhibition, complement each other and look as if they were taken by the same photographer.

Colouring Pencils

This week is all about coloured pencils. We all still have coloured pencils lying around somewhere at home, but if you don't, you really need to buy some, because they make great photo subjects and seeing them, whether in real life or in a photo, will instantly put you in a good mood 🤩

There are two approaches to capturing colouring pencils: “Accurate” or “Playful”. The camera settings will help you achieve each look in your photos.

Camera settings:

Accurate:

When photographing coloured pencils lying flat on a table, try using a strong depth of field:

  • Exposure time: 1/125 sec + ISO depending on available light

  • Aperture: f11

The result will be similar to the photo above 👆🏽

Playful:

If you're shooting in a more playful way, focus on a single coloured pencil and use a shallow depth of field to gradually blur the rest of the image.

  • Exposure time 1/400 sec (or slower, e.g. 1/250 sec depending on the light)

  • ISO: 200

  • Aperture: f2.8

The result will be similar to the photo below 👇🏽

Here are a few photography ideas for this theme:

  • Start by arranging the pens in a row that looks good to the eye – by this I mean that the colours should go well together overall. Then try experimenting with more unusual combinations. The larger your selection of pens, the more you can experiment.

  • Or how about shavings after sharpening?

  • Arrange the pens in a rainbow or ombré colour gradient.

  • Use contrasting backgrounds where bright colours stand out against dark or textured backgrounds; experiment with contrasts.

  • Experiment with image composition and perspective. Arrange the pens into circles, spirals, hearts or arrows to make them more visually interesting.

  • Add doodles or sketches with the pens to clarify the context and encourage creativity.

  • Leave areas of the image blank to direct the focus and create space to breathe.

  • Add rulers, sketchbooks or hands to complement the pens without distracting from them.

  • Use only 2–3 colours for a striking, graphic style.

Alternatives:

  • It doesn't have to be coloured pencils, how about paintbrushes?

  • Or chalk?

  • Or simply a coloured pencil drawing?

Don't forget the accessories, they can be lively too!

  • Nothing goes better with coloured pencils than children and cute little hands:

  • Old pencils look a little more interesting than new, unused ones, but better new pencils than no pencils at all ?

Always use backgrounds that enhance the main subject - either by building a contrast or blending in. Pay attention to shadows - they should either be artfully long and strong, or so subtle that they’re barely noticeable (just enough to create three-dimensionality. Move the set-up out of direct sunlight, but use natural window light as the light source.

Including the same colours and/or using the same light is a great way to define your style.

Please note that this is only an excerpt from the challenge. 🤩 The original contains even more ideas and an inspiring mood board!
