Photography Style Challenge: Day 5
Today's training covers:
"AN ANALYSIS OF YOUR MOOD BOARDS"
Sadly, we've already reached the last day of this wonderful, inspiring challenge.
Thank SO MUCH for being part of it.
Today we're turning the focus on you, the stars of the challenge. In this training I'll be analysing a selection of the mood boards handed in to detect the style elements that the photographers might want to include in their photography processses to create their photography style.
What youβve learned in the challenge:
Your photography style has nothing to do with a particular photography genre. However, you may feel more drawn to some subjects more than others. Taking photos of only landscapes, portraits, street etc. would become boring and can be extremely restrictive.
You can have a photography style that lets you capture almost every type of subject.
Photographers who have a photography style already know what the finished image could possibly look like as soon as they see the subject.
Photographers who don't have a photography style have to start weighing up the options available to them and end up subconsciously capturing a photo that looks very similar to one they've possibly seen on the internet/gallery etc. This results in them feeling no connection whatsoever to the finished image.
Having a photography style lets you be more creative. Because you already know how the finished image could potentially look, you can use your brain space to come up with ideas for how to make a more interesting photo by combining your style elements.
There are photos that you may feel extremely drawn to, but please be aware that you may not be able to implement this type of photography into your creative photography style. For instance, astrophotography could potentially fit into your photography if you are more of an experimental photographer or your photos include a lot of navy blue or purplish tones.
A photography style is usually the combination of several different photography methods, so you would essentially maybe feel more drawn to particular colours and then go ahead and capture the photo at a certain focal length or use a certain amount of depth of field in your photo with each and every one of them.
Some accounts on Instagram look like the photographer has a photography style, when in fact they are only presenting images of similar subjects in the same way. This is not a photography style.
Some Instagram accounts include photos that are potentially quite similar, but they are only recognisable as being captured by the same photographer because they include very similar things in very similar places. This is not a photography style.
To have a photography style, you need the skill set required to capture your photography style. If you are a beginner photographer and your photos are still amateur-looking, you will need to learn the basics of photography before you can start turning your photos into ones in your photography style.
Not everyone needs to be guided through the process of having a photography style, as some photographers focus very early on a particular type of photography and they enjoy only one photography look.
If you aren't guided through developing a photography style, it can take up to around 10 years for your style to come to life.
Some photographers never develop a photography style, and their photography tends to stagnate at a particular skill level early on, and they never get better than that.
You can't define your photography style with a preset alone. Your editing style is definitely going to help you underline your photos and I definitely recommend editing your photos similarly if you want to be recognised by a certain photo look. Not every preset will create the same look in your photos.
That is why you need to be aware of how a preset affects your photos or your editing style affects your photos so that you can adjust the settings accordingly to make your photo look like the others.
Having a photography style and presenting your images in a gallery on Instagram is the surest and fastest way to gain more like-minded followers.
It's better to have 10 people going absolutely raving mad when they see your photos than having 100 who mindlessly like your photos and then scroll on.
Sometimes you have to be really daring regarding your photography style. It's important to feel absolutely connected to the finished results. It doesn't matter if you are creating photos that other people hate. It's those photos that other people may absolutely love. You do not have to be everything to everyone.
And what happens next?
The next step to creating your own photography style is to learn how to create your own style in your photos and how the photographers who inspired you during the challenge take their photos so that you can incorporate their methods into your photography.
